Water-Based Contact Adhesive

Environmentally friendly water-based contact adhesive with low VOC emissions. Meets strict compliance requirements for EU, US, and international markets without sacrificing bond performance.

Water-based contact adhesive represents the industry's response to tightening global VOC regulations and growing demand for safer workplace environments. Unlike solvent-based formulations that rely on toluene, acetone, or other volatile organic compounds as carriers, water-based contact adhesive uses water as its primary dispersion medium. The active bonding polymer — typically a polychloroprene (neoprene) latex or an acrylic-modified dispersion — is suspended in water rather than dissolved in organic solvents, reducing VOC emissions to less than 50 g/L.

The polychloroprene dispersion technology behind our water-based formulation delivers bond performance that approaches solvent-based alternatives on porous substrates. On wood-to-laminate bonds, our product achieves peel strength of 2.5 N/mm or greater, which satisfies requirements for indoor furniture manufacturing, textile lamination, and institutional construction projects. The adhesive dries from a white, milky liquid to a clear, transparent film, providing a visual cue for operators to know when the adhesive has reached proper tack for bonding.

Compliance certifications are a major factor driving adoption of water-based adhesive. Our formulation meets EU REACH regulation requirements, carries GREENGUARD certification for low chemical emissions, and complies with GB 18583 (Chinese national standard for hazardous substances in adhesives). These credentials enable buyers to satisfy green building program requirements including LEED, BREEAM, and WELL certification. For furniture manufacturers exporting to European and North American markets, switching to water-based adhesive eliminates regulatory barriers related to VOC content in finished products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is water-based contact adhesive as strong as solvent-based?
On porous substrates like wood, MDF, fabric, and foam, water-based contact adhesive achieves 80-90% of solvent-based bond strength, which is sufficient for most applications. On non-porous substrates like metal and plastic, solvent-based formulations generally provide better adhesion. Our water-based formula achieves ≥2.5 N/mm peel strength on wood-to-laminate.
What VOC level does your water-based adhesive achieve?
Our water-based contact adhesive contains less than 50 g/L VOC, meeting EU Directive 2004/42/CE, US EPA standards, and GREENGUARD certification requirements. This is over 90% lower VOC than conventional solvent-based contact adhesives.
Can water-based contact adhesive be used in cold climates?
Water-based adhesive must not be stored or applied below 5°C, as the water content can freeze and destabilize the formulation. In cold environments, ensure the adhesive and substrates are at room temperature (above 15°C) before application. Once fully cured, the bond performs well down to -10°C.
What is the drying time for water-based contact adhesive?
Drying time is 20-40 minutes at standard conditions, longer than solvent-based adhesives. This can be accelerated with forced air drying, infrared heating, or working in low-humidity environments. The adhesive changes from white/milky to clear when ready for bonding.
