SBS Contact Adhesive

SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) contact adhesive is formulated around a thermoplastic elastomer that delivers reliable bonding performance at a significantly lower raw material cost than chloroprene rubber. The SBS triblock copolymer consists of polystyrene end-blocks connected by a flexible polybutadiene mid-block, creating a material that behaves like vulcanized rubber at room temperature but can be processed like a thermoplastic. When dissolved in solvent and applied as a contact adhesive, SBS forms flexible, tacky films with good peel strength on porous substrates.

The primary commercial advantage of SBS contact adhesive is cost. With raw material pricing typically 15-25 percent lower than neoprene formulations, SBS adhesive offers substantial savings for high-volume operations such as furniture factories bonding veneer, edge banding, and decorative laminates. The extended open time of 15-30 minutes is an additional production benefit, giving workers more flexibility when aligning large panels or complex assemblies before the bond is made.
