SBS Contact Adhesive

Cost-effective SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) based contact adhesive offering reliable bonding performance for furniture, woodworking, and general assembly applications.

SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) contact adhesive is formulated around a thermoplastic elastomer that delivers reliable bonding performance at a significantly lower raw material cost than chloroprene rubber. The SBS triblock copolymer consists of polystyrene end-blocks connected by a flexible polybutadiene mid-block, creating a material that behaves like vulcanized rubber at room temperature but can be processed like a thermoplastic. When dissolved in solvent and applied as a contact adhesive, SBS forms flexible, tacky films with good peel strength on porous substrates.

The primary commercial advantage of SBS contact adhesive is cost. With raw material pricing typically 15-25 percent lower than neoprene formulations, SBS adhesive offers substantial savings for high-volume operations such as furniture factories bonding veneer, edge banding, and decorative laminates. The extended open time of 15-30 minutes is an additional production benefit, giving workers more flexibility when aligning large panels or complex assemblies before the bond is made. SBS adhesives also tend to produce lower odor during application compared to traditional CR-based products, improving workplace comfort.

The trade-off with SBS chemistry is reduced heat resistance. SBS contact adhesive maintains bond integrity up to approximately 70 degrees Celsius, which is adequate for indoor furniture, leather goods workshops, general-purpose bonding, and any environment where sustained high temperatures are not a factor. For buyers operating in temperature-controlled facilities or producing products that will not face extreme heat exposure, SBS contact adhesive provides the optimal balance between performance and economy. Our formulations are available in multiple viscosity grades for both brush and spray application methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose SBS over neoprene contact adhesive?
SBS contact adhesive is the right choice when cost efficiency is a priority and the application does not require high heat resistance. It works well for furniture veneer bonding, leather goods assembly, and general workshop use where operating temperatures stay below 70°C.
What is the bond strength of SBS contact adhesive?
Our SBS contact adhesive achieves peel strength of ≥2.0 N/mm on wood-to-laminate substrates. While this is lower than neoprene (≥3.0 N/mm), it is sufficient for most furniture and general bonding applications where extreme heat or chemical resistance is not required.
Can SBS adhesive be used for shoe manufacturing?
SBS contact adhesive can be used for temporary bonding in shoe manufacturing, but we recommend neoprene or PU adhesives for permanent sole bonding due to their superior heat and flex resistance. SBS is suitable for insole lamination and non-structural footwear assembly.
What is the open time of SBS contact adhesive?
SBS contact adhesive has an open time of 15-30 minutes at standard conditions (23°C, 50% RH). The extended open time makes it suitable for large panel bonding where alignment adjustments may be needed. Open time can be shortened in warm, dry conditions.
