Silicone Sealant

Neutral Silicone Sealant

Neutral cure (oxime/alkoxy) silicone sealant suitable for a wide range of construction and industrial applications. Non-corrosive to metals, mirrors, and sensitive substrates.

Neutral cure silicone sealant derives its name from its curing chemistry: unlike acetoxy silicone that releases acetic acid during cross-linking, neutral silicone uses oxime or alkoxy cure mechanisms that produce non-corrosive byproducts. This distinction is not merely academic — it determines substrate compatibility. Acetoxy cure silicone corrodes copper, brass, and zinc surfaces, attacks the silver backing on mirrors (causing black-edge deterioration), and reacts adversely with alkaline substrates such as concrete and marble. Neutral cure silicone eliminates all of these compatibility issues, making it the default choice for professional construction and industrial sealing applications.

The two primary neutral cure chemistries — oxime and alkoxy — each have specific performance characteristics. Oxime cure (also called ketoximino) sealants are the most common, offering good adhesion to most construction materials, moderate cure speed, and broad compatibility. Alkoxy cure sealants produce alcohol (typically methanol) as a byproduct and provide superior adhesion to porous substrates like concrete and masonry. Our manufacturing line produces both oxime and alkoxy formulations, allowing buyers to select the optimal chemistry for their project requirements. Both types deliver service temperature performance from -40 to +150 degrees Celsius and UV stability exceeding 20 years in exterior weathering exposure.

From a performance standpoint, our neutral silicone sealant achieves Shore A hardness of 18-25 (indicating a flexible, rubber-like cure), tensile strength above 0.8 MPa, and elongation at break exceeding 400 percent. The high elongation is critical for construction joint sealing, where thermal expansion and contraction, building settlement, and wind load deflection create constant movement in sealed joints. With a rated movement capability of plus or minus 25 percent, the sealant accommodates joint width changes without adhesive failure or cohesive tearing — meeting the requirements of ASTM C920, EN 15651, and GB/T 14683 standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose neutral silicone sealant over acetoxy?
Neutral silicone sealant is the preferred choice because it does not release corrosive acetic acid during curing. This makes it safe for metals (no corrosion), mirrors (no black-edge damage), marble and natural stone (no staining), and concrete (no alkaline reaction). While acetoxy cures faster, neutral is more versatile.
How long does neutral silicone sealant take to cure?
Skin formation occurs in 10-20 minutes. Full depth cure proceeds at approximately 2-3 mm per 24 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. A standard 10mm joint takes 3-5 days for full cure. Cure speed increases with higher temperature and humidity.
Is your neutral silicone sealant suitable for structural glazing?
Our standard neutral sealant is designed for weatherproofing and non-structural sealing. For structural glazing applications requiring load-bearing bonds, we recommend our structural silicone sealant which provides higher tensile and shear strength with documented structural performance data.
Can neutral silicone sealant be painted?
Standard silicone sealant cannot be painted over, as most paints will not adhere to the cured silicone surface. For applications requiring painting, we offer a paintable silicone-hybrid sealant, or we recommend applying sealant after painting and masking the joint edges.
What colors are available for neutral silicone sealant?
We stock white, clear/transparent, black, grey, and brown as standard colors. Custom RAL color matching is available with a minimum order of 2,000 cartridges. We provide color samples for customer approval before bulk production begins.
